Shea Butter Facts:
COLOR
The color of raw or unrefined Shea Butter ranges from cream to a grayish yellow. This is the original form of Shea Butter. Refined Shea Butter is more highly processed but has many of its natural components still intact. Highly refined Shea Butter has an opaque pure white color. Beware: Other butters that have a bright yellow color but are labeled as "Shea Butter" is not actually Shea Butter. Most are from a different plant in Africa grown in a totally different climate. It is safe to use and has its own benefits, however, it is [not] Shea Butter.
SMELL
Shea Butter has a natural nutty or “earthy” smell. Over time the smell of the Shea Butter will diminish. If you have an unrefined Shea Butter and it almost has no smell, there is a possibility that it is getting old. Shea Butter should not stink not matter how old. It [is] possible for Shea Butter to go bad and if it does, do not use it. Always purchase Organic Shea Butter whenever possible. It is important that what you put [on] your body is just as pure as what you put [in] your body. The [natural] smell of healthy Shea Butter goes away after 10 - 20 minutes of being on the body.
AGE
To maintain the natural [healing] powers of Shea Butter, it should be unaltered and stored properly. If you do purchase Shea Butter with added oils, fragrances, etc.; It should be used as quickly as possible. Unaltered, raw (unrefined) and in this case, Organic Shea Butter can last up to 3 years from the date of extraction from the seed. Our products will [always] have an expiration date. Even when purchasing Shea Butter from other carriers or stores, please look for the expiration date. If no expiration is displayed please ask; If no date is known, I do not recommend purchasing that item. For optimum [healing] powers and nutrients, using your Shea Butter within 18 months of production is ideal.
STORAGE
Shea Butter does not need to be refrigerated, however, over a period of two to three years, the Shea Butter will begin to lose some of its effectiveness. As the natural components of the Shea Butter begin to break down, some of the healing properties will diminish. Even at this point, the Shea Butter will continue to be an effective moisturizer. Store the Shea Butter in a cool place. If you're going to use it within a couple of years, you should not experience any problems.
MELTING POINT
One of the wonderful things about Shea Butter is that it has a low melting point. When you apply it to warm skin, it literally melts. In turn, that is also one of the not so good things about its low melting point. If it’s in a warm environment such as a hot room or car, it will melt. It’s possible for it to be melted or slightly melted upon delivery to you on warm days. If this occurs, don't worry the Shea Butter is good. Just set it in a cool place with the lid off and it will solidify again. While it’s cooling, you might want to stir it occasionally to bring the liquids and fat solids back into together. This will encourage a smoother texture. |
